＃2 ボーディングスクールへの出願－面接

ボーディングスクールへの出願が共通化する度合いはこれからも進んで行くと思います。北米にある300校あまりのボーディングスクールは、国内だけのニーズでは限界があることに気付いていて、留学生の受け入れをどの学校でも積極的に行っています。
なるべく、多くの人が合理的に出願できるようにするための工夫はこれからも進化していくことでしょう。
その進化を受け入れられるようにするためにも英文解釈中心の英語教育から自己表現、自己主張のできる英語教育に変わっていく必要があると思います。
出願の仕方がITの発達により合理的に進歩しつつあるなかで、ボーディングスクールの出願条件のなかでとても大きな役割を果たしている面接、すなわちインタビューはおそらくボーディングスクールが創立された昔から現在までほとんど変化をしていません。
ボーディングスクールにおいては、面接はかならずアドミッションスタッフ1名が志願者と個別に対面するマンツーマン方式で行われます。志願者をグループ化する試みは今までいずれのボーディングスクールも実施していません。また、複数のアドミッションスタッフが面接にあたることもありません。社会がどのように変化しても、ボーディングスクールの面接だけは、全く変化しません。
面接のユニークさは、面接時間にあるように思います。面接時間が長い場合はおおよそが良い結果を生み、30分以内の短い場合は、確率から言えば、良い結果を生みません。
北米ボーディングスクールの合否決定は、アドミッションスタッフ、学校管理者、そしてその他の関係者を交えてのミーティングでなされますが、それぞれの志願者を担当するのは、面接をしたアドミッションスタッフです。その人がミーティングでどのように志願者を説明するかが合否決定に重大な影響を及ぼすことは言うまでもありません。
面接はかしこまった質問とそれを受ける志願者のパターン化した返答によって行われるものではありません。志願者は、担当するアドミッションスタッフに笑顔で迎えられ、日常生活に関するごくありふれたことがらの情報交換から始まります。時々、面接の本筋から脱線するような話題もあり、時には1人の面接が50分にも及ぶことがあるのです。
